Selected study unit - Lighthouse Stamp Society

Since a significant number of countries around the world have large lakes or coastlines, a great many of them also have lighthouses to help sailors avoid dangerous areas near land. Lighthouses have become symbols of travel, safety, strength and guidance and images of lighthouses have been used to portray these and other ideals in a wide range of content. The Lighthouse Stamp Society similarly guides its members through the wealth of philatelic materials, including not only stamps, but also cancellations, postal stationery, currency, phone cards and cinderellas. The society's bimonthly journal, The Philatelic Beacon, expands on subjects related to the topic, and the society's website,, further guides collectors with images of selected philatelic materials and current information on new issues and other lighthouse news.
